People cannot take those experiences away from you and you will always remember them if you don’t block them out of you mind. These experiences control how you act and react in different situations. Because everyone had had different experiences in their pasts people will always be different from each other. Some people may have similar characteristics but that is only because they have had experiences. Bullying is a perfect example of how people are different. Mr. Napier talk about how bullies had parents who were unable to subscribe constant punishment. The parents were unreliable on how they would punish their son. Because of the bullies different experiences with their parents they turn out different then another kid who had parents that were able to punish their child with acceptable and constant punishment.

In the Novel Speak Melinda is who she is because she was raped. If Melinda was never raped she would have had the chance to still be friends with Rachelle and many others who she never even meet. Melinda’s mind works the way it does because she does not want to come a decision to except what has happened to her. The reason Art is the only class that she has an A in is because that is the only class that is relating to her at that point in her life. Melisa has her own mind and it is impossible for her to progress in life if she doesn’t get over what happened to her over the summer. Melinda is lonely because she will not let other people into her life and others won’t let her into theirs. This makes her, her because her personality has changed because she is scared that she might be raped again.

How Our Class Discussion Relates To The Novel

Cole Thomas

Great Books Period 2

Wednesday February 3, 2010

I also enjoyed this morning’s discussion. I believe that everything that we talked about directly related to the novel Little Brother. The class discussion and the Book Little brother are related because of the concept of freedom and surveillance. Surveillance is a key concept because everything everyone does is being monitored and the bulk of our discussion this morning was on how the Chinese’s monitor the information that their citizens have access to. We also talked a little about the Patriot act and the American Government monitoring its citizens. We said that like in the novel our government has the power of monitoring everything we do. This was a scary thought for me not because I am a terrorist but because then they would be able to see my personalized documents and files. I thought it was very funny how u took over our computers and made your point to us all and showed us how it would feel to lose control of something that is one of your more personal items.

Towards the end we talked about the new law that the government is trying to create called ACTA, Anti-copyright Trade Agreement. In this agreement between the United States of America, European Commission, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, Canada, the European Union, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. It is my opinion that the United States should not go though with ACTA. I dislike the fact that the Obama administration is creating this agreement in private so that people won’t have the knowledge about it so that they may not protest it.

In the previous semester we talked about how literature is something that people read and write so that the can connect with others in the world. I believe that this book provokes emotions with people about the government, which is in place in their country. They wonder if it is possible if America will ever digress so far as to act like they do in the book. This book is also targeted towards teenagers because every teenager wants to believe that they can make a difference in the world.

At the end of chapter 14 Marcus recites the declaration of independence. I knew that we read the declaration of independence so that we could understand freedom better in the book but when he recited it I realized that another reason was that you wanted that part of the book to mean more to us than just a line from a famous document.

I am really amazed at how you can start talking about all of these separate topics and in the end make them related. It really helps me understand better because we talk about everything separate and then in the end I can connect how they are related.

The Dumbest Generation? Don’t Be Dumb.

Out of every single blog this one is defiantly my favorite. The topic discussed is often also discussed in my house between my mother and I. She is always saying I am playing to many video games and they are not good for my education and so I stop playing little bit, finish my homework, and then go back to watching TV, talking to people on my computer or playing Call of Duty 6. In the article “The Dumbest Generation? Don’t Be Dumb” the writer gives many examples of how my generation does not know common sense question like who the president of the United States is. He says that this is because of too much technology and I have to say if anything technology helps spread knowledge. Take T.V. for example even if you don’t watch The news as you are flipping through the channels you will most likely see something about politics, or you might flip over the history channel see an explosion pause for a minute and learn a few facts about world war two. This may not be as efficient as learning about history in school but you do pick up facts hear and there. I believe that every generation has its “dumb people”. I’m sure that before TV came out if we went out on the street we could find people who have no idea what is going on in the world. Now days it is very hard not to know what is happening in your country due to the media. And if you look hard enough it is very easy to find someone that is completely clueless. Jay Leno had a show called the Jay Walk All-stars where he would ask them commonsense questions and they would not know a single answer. To us this is completely amazing that they didn’t know the answer but the producers just looked for people who were so out of touch with reality that they had no idea what anyone was talking about. My point is that every generation has its dumb people all you have to do is go out and interview them to make your point.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://myblogcthomas.blogspot.com/2009/12/dumbest-generation-dont-be-dumb.html' title='The Dumbest Generation? Alexis de Tocqueville states, “When all prerogatives of birth and fortune are abolished, when all professions are open to all and a man’s own energies may bring him to the top of any of the, an ambitious man may think it easy to launch on a great career and feel that he is called to no common destiny. But that is a delusion which experience quickly corrects. The same equality which allows each man to entertain vast hopes makes each man by himself weak his power is limited on every side, though his longings may wander where the will.”(De Tocqueville 166). This quote demonstrates how Alexis de Tocqueville believes that because of equality everyone believes they have that same change of gaining happiness but in reality it is much harder than expected and the man who set out for happiness will fail and return weaker than when he set out.

5. Does Tocqueville think Americans are restless because they don’t know what they want or because what they want is not attainable?

Alexis de Tocqueville believes that Americans are restless because what they want is not attainable. He eludes to this quite a few times in his work but it is most easily spotted in this excerpt, “That is a quality which ever retreats before them without getting quite our of sight, and as it retreats it beckons them onto pursue. Every instant they think they will catch it, and each time it slips through their fingers. They see it close enough to know its charms, but they do not get near enough to enjoy it, and they will be dead before they have fully relished its delights.” (De Tocqueville 168). In this passage you can see De Tocqueville explaining how Americans can see happiness but never actually reach the point that they are striving for. The happiness that they are working so hard to achieve is always one step ahead of them begging them to keep pursuing it.

Comparing the Peasants to the previous ruling class

The peasants and the previous ruling class are very similar in the way they deal with personal appeals. The ruling class listened to no one and only looked out for themselves. When the Marquis runs over the mans child all he does is through a coin out the window to pay for the childes life. The peasents then create a petition and it is completely ignored by the Nobels. When the peasants take over the country through the revolution they are even more violent then the government currently in place. Because the peasents are such a large group they are very hard for Monsiur Dufrage to control. Throughout the novel we continue to get the image that crowds have a mind of there own and are very fickle. Since the Peasants have become the main ruling class this means that the new government is also fickle and dangerous. When Darnay is taken prisoner when he reterns to france he is put on trial. People always say that it doesn’t matter what people think about you but in the end that is not true. If someone thinks your weird than they may not want to talk to you or hang around you, or if you are lazy you wont be hired for the job. If nobody wants to talk to you this is one of the worst possible things that can happen to a person. They would feel like they had done something so wrong that they aren’t even acknowledged by others. This is one of the main reasons why it is hard to not care about what people think about you. You always want people to talk to you and care about you. Some may disagree with me that we can control what people think about us with our actions but I say it is possible. They judge you though how you act. If you work out and lift weights people will think that you are an athlete, if you play video games all day people will think you are a nerd. You can also control what people think about you with what you say, what you wear, and how you act towards other people. You won’t experience love, happiness, or excitement. The only emotions that you would have are hatred and anger. What if you where a prisoner of war, would you try to escape or would you wait to be rescued? What would you do in these two scenarios? For both of these questions I would say I would try to escape. I would hate to just sit in a little room for days on end and know that nothing would ever change. We didn’t try to win we only tried to hold a citron point. I don’t think that is a war that should be fought. If you go to war you should do everything you can do to win a quickly and most efficiently as possible. You should also try to remove all civilians and hurt as little as possible to help stop the effects of war on people’s lives. I would go to war for me. I would also go to war to liberate a group of people or to give a country back to it people.<span the author makes Lennie like a kid but in a giants body. i thought it was funny how curly starts to beat up lennie and george says to "get him" and lennie breaks his hand without even trying. i also like lennie because he likes Rabbits and i also like rabbits. lennie likes soft things and i like soft thing. i cant really think of any other things or reasons why i like lennie i just get this don't care than nothing in the world would get finished. Romeo was enthusiastic about his love for juliet and so they where able to get married in secret even though both of their families hated each other. Lennie is enthusiastic about rabbits so he has a goal in life that he works towards every day. If Lennie didn't care about rabbits he would have no reason to try to be good for george. If you weren't enthusiastic about your job all of us wouldn't learn a thing but since you are enthusiastic we all are really good at using Language and reading type='text'>of Mice and Men Blog #4

I think dreams sometimes fall because you don't have a realistic dream that is even possible. Romeo and juliet both have the dream to get married but since they are on opposite sides of a family feud and have to be so sneaky they where just set up to fail. In Things Fall Apart Okonkawo Dreams of being a rich and powerful man but as it say in the tittle Things fall apart for Okonkawo. He tries to hard, and gets himself banished. Being banished makes him lose so much time to gain a higher social class he has no way to fulfill his dream. I have dreams of becoming rich having alot of friends who don't just want me for my stuff, owning my own island, owning my own soccer complex, becoming the King of England, Going back in time, Join the CIA, Have 2 Kids, Go to a Good Collage, Have Some fun, and Be happy. Most of those things probobly won't come true due to diffrent variable that can affect each one and if it is even possible, Take Being the King of England for example. i may wish to be but there is now way i can become the kings son. no way in the whole entire universe because i cant change my perents no matter what. I guess i could get the king to adopt me or somthing like that but then even than i don't know if i they would let me be king because i am not of royal blood.
<br they don't they could go into a depression and kill themselves like Romeo and Juliet. All Romeo has is his love for Juliet because his best friend Mercutio died. Without any friends Romeo only has Juliet and when he thinks Juliet is dead he thinks there is nothing for him left to live for. In Of Mice and men Lennie really needs George as a friend because without George Lennie would have no place to stay or be because no one wants a big stupid guy that doesn't know his own strength working on there farm. I think it is also important to have friends because you have someone to talk to when you don't know what to do and have someplace to go when u want to do something and u are board. In Things fall apart Okonkwo has friends at the beginning of the book but towards the end of the book no one agrees that they should drive out the white people and so he also kills himself at the end of the book. In the book A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, Ishmael is stuck in the middle of a war and is separated from his friends and family. Throughout that book you constantly hear him talking about how he wished for his family and friends to be back with him.

Of Mice and Men Blog #2

A friend is someone who likes to be around you and you like to be around them. A friend is someone who will help you through tough times and will cheer you up when u feel sad. We have friends because we don't want to be all alone in the world. friends are important to have because they give you someone to talk to when u feel like you cant talk to anyone else. It is also important to have friends because friends introduce u to people you would never meet if you didn't have that person as a friend. All Romeo has is his love for Juliet because his best friend Mercutio died. Without any friends Romeo only has Juliet and when he thinks Juliet is dead he thinks there is nothing for him left to live for so he kills himself. Just because there are more people that are offended by the N word doesn't mean that it is worse than any other word that is a racial slur. I would say that the N word is more offensive than some nicknames given to people from a certain area or background like Aussie for Australians. But some Words that are derogatory towards Japanese people like the word Jap, is just as offensive as the N word. but as I'm typing this i realize that I Say "The N word" Not the actual word where as i said Jap and Aussie. So i would say that the N word is more offensive than some words and Just as offensive as other words. I also think that depending where you are from some words are more offensive than other words. it all depends on your background and where you are from. It also depends on your race and country of origin. i would bet that People from africa think that the N word is more offensive than any other word in the whole wide wide world.

Romeo and Juliet

Would you have lied to your whole family if you were in Juliet’s position? I wish they wouldn't talk so much about their past so much cause i would rather know what is going on in the present time not in the past. I thought it was a good way for him to start the book by talking about how the guy fell out of the copter. this book is very gory but has lots of information in it. I also like how it is a true story actually happened.
<div people about his feeling and is becoming less violent all the time. It is so nice when they find his uncle and he Is really happy to see ishmael, since he never visited him before the war. Ester is very nice to ishmael i like it when he accepts her as his temporary sister. i also like when he talks about his father and his fathers family because it makes me feel like we are getting to know him even better.

Chapter 19- I understand why he would be scared to renter a new family because of what he has been through but i think he will be able to do everything just fine. I like how he went to the party and danced with himself but got sucked in to dancing with another person. i can also understand why he wouldn't tell her about his past. i also don't understand why the man who was interviewing him was laughing at him? After the interview i didn't think that he would be picked but he was so thats good

<br where professional children discussing politics when they are in the meetings.

Chapter 21-i cant believe he left new york and went back to his that someone could get so used to so much violence. It is so sad that when they go to see their old commander that they want to hear about his war stories and how many people he has killed. When the commander asked them to stay the night I knew that this was the moment where he could leave the army. We don’t have many pages left so it is logical to realize his life is about to change for the better. When the Commander begun to choose who would stay and who would go, I was so happy for Ishmael. He was very smart to take his bayonet They went though a lot of checkpoints. When the army boys got into a fight with the rebel boy I chuckled to my self. I can’t believe that the white people who where in charge thought that just because they took them to the city that they wouldn’t try to kill each other. The fight was very well written in the book I especially liked when his friend saved him from being killed in the middle of the battle. I thought it was the rebels when the soldiers took Ishmael and his friends away. When they took them to the village I realized that he wasn’t with the rebels but with the government soldiers. I’m glad he didn’t fight for the rebels but I don’t know if the people he is fighting for are the good guys or just another group of bad guys. The soldiers seem to do a lot of marijuana smoking in the village. The training they went through isn’t very long. But I guess since when they are actually in a battle they don’t really aim they just stick their gun over the hill and shot.

Chapter 13- When their boss gave them the day off of training I thought he was just being nice but he knew that most of the boys would die so he let them have a good last day before death. They sure have lots of ammo at this village. I bet the white capsules are crack rocks. I wonder how long they just wait in the grass for the rebels. I wonder when he is finally going to get shot because he seems to be bullet proof. Nothing can hit him, even if he stands up in the middle of a war to pick up his dead friend. He could have killed someone when he started shooting after his nightmare. The soldiers seem to really like durgs.

Chapters 7-8-9-10 A Long Way Gone

Chapter 7- it’s a shame that they spent all that time on their farms and the rebels destroyed them all. I knew that Beah would get separated from junior at some point in the book I just didn’t know it would be this soon. I like how we get to see flashbacks of his life before the war. I’m glad he stayed to look for his brother. I know I wouldn’t leave without looking for him. He seems to do a lot of village hopping. Nobody trusts anyone since the war has started. The people in the river would have been a nice posy for him to travel with.

Chapter 8- is he in the rainforest? I like how he sleeps in a tree that would be cool. I think that the fruit he is eating is peaches but I don’t know for sure. He talks a lot about his grandparents in this chapter and in other chapters. I don’t know why he didn’t leave the forest earlier since he was so lonely. Im glad he finally found some friends and I like the name “the seven boys”. I didn’t know people could be so afraid of seven boys that didn’t even have any guns.

Chapter 9- its funny when they finally reach the ocean. They think that there is a war going on or something like that. I don’t understand why they run into every village they see. If nobody likes teenage boys than why don’t they walk in very slowly and try not to freak anybody out? That is so brave of them and I don’t think that I would have been able to do that even though they only went halfway. When Beah described the people that walked by him it made me so sad. I had to take a break from the reading and do something else. I’m glad he didn’t go all the way back to the village. If he had I have no doubt that he would have been killed or captured.

Chapter 2-This chapter was very short and boring but it did show how when he got away from the war that it still when with him where ever he goes. When he dreamed about the war and then reverts back to it during daily life it just shows how scared he was by it.

Chapter 3-Wwhen the soldiers invaded the town it didn’t surprise me that the government soldiers abandoned ship. I don’t understand why they would have set up the artillery in only one place and if you only put it in one place why put it by the river. I’m surprised that the soldiers chased the villagers even after they escaped the village. Once he gets his start he will probably become a nicer man. I don’t think that he should beat his son but he should sit him down and talk to him so that his son knows what he is being beaten for. Although every time we see his son in the story he is hard at work next to his father. He also doesn’t want his wives to be selfish or lazy. If she doesn’t work hard than she is just dead weight, she is just another mouth to feed and she doesn’t help bring in any food. She also is an example to his kids. If they see there mom can get away being lazy they will also be lazy. For example during the week of peace he beats his wife because she left to get her hair done. He beat her because she didn’t make his dinner and she left all of her kids to the first wife and didn’t feed any of them. So overall I think that Okonkwo is a nice guy but he is to afraid of becoming lazy like his father.

P.S. and how his story will end

How The Story Will End

I believe that P.S will eventually turn himself in because that is the right thing to do. When he does I think he will go to the Latin teacher and tell him the whole story. The teacher will be very disappointed that he cheated on the test but very proud of him for turning himself in. He will also wonder why he wouldn’t cheat on the whole test and get an A but just cheat on part and get a C. The teachers will cal his dad and tell his dad what his son had done. When his dad finds out he will be very disappointed in him and not let him go to Colorado. Charlie will also be disappointed about how they can’t go to Colorado together. I think that P.S. and his father are going to have a talk on how P.S. has had to much pressure on himself. On my very first soccer team there was a kid named C.J. I got the impression that he was a geek and weird because no one talked to him and everyone left him alone. As the season wore on he became one of my closest friends on my team. He had played on my soccer team until last year when I left the team to go to a different club.
Also on the first day of 6th grade there was a kid from Ireland that I thought was really dorky. Then in the second week of school I realized that he was actually a really funny guy. I sat with him at lunch and he became my best friend throughout my middle school career. He is still a very good friend even though he now goes to Park Tudor. He told me that he thought that thought the same thing about me that I thought about him. He said that once he learned that I played soccer he realized that I could be one of his good friends. I invited him to try out for my team in Zionsville.
He tried out for my team and made it. When he met C.J. he thought the same thing I did, that he was weird and a loner. Just like I did, he eventually realized that C.J. was one of the nicest people one our team. Sometimes first impressions aren’t the best.

cites with a hawkeye

Readers Response

This article was a very good article for us to read since many of us use a Face Book or Myspace. Many people view these pages of us every day. I believe colleges have a point that what we do now will affect us for the rest of our lives. It also projects an everlasting image of the people we are seen with and how we act around the areas we are in most.

I do believe that the schools can enforce certain rules that limit what you can post online. The schools, however, should only have that right if its students sign a consent form or if it is a requirement to go to that school. Although it is a public site there should be some limits on what they can prevent you from doing. Believe that schools shouldn’t have to stop you from posting an inappropriate picture because you should know better.

There are many more ways of viewing this article but I believe that The University Of Iowa has the right ideas about how to keep a good image of their school even with sites like Face Book and Myspace.
